Mary Jane is a senior Ottawa Litigator. She focuses on Family Law, Estate Litigation, and Plaintiff’s Personal Injury Litigation. Prior to joining Augustine Bater Binks, LLP, she was a partner in the Ottawa office of Gowlings. She has also previously served as an assistant crown attorney and as vice chairman of the Commercial Registration Appeal Tribunal (Ontario).
An advocate in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Trial Division) and the Ontario Court of Appeal, Mary Jane also serves as an arbitrator in family law disputes. She has served as a family law instructor for the Law Society of Upper Canada and as a sessional lecturer for the Carleton University Law Department. She is a frequent presenter at and organizer of continuing legal education conferences in Ottawa and throughout Ontario.
She received her law degree from Queen’s University, Mary Jane was called to the bar in the province of Ontario. In 1982 she was appointed a Queen’s Counsel.
Mary Jane is the Advocates’ Society’s 2016 Ottawa Honouree and has been selected by her peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in Canada®* in the practice area of Family Law in consecutive years from 2006 to 2020.
Mary Jane was awarded the Carleton Medal, the highest honour granted by the Carleton County Law Association in 2018 in recognition of her legal career.
As a vibrant member of the Ottawa community, Mary Jane has been involved with, and served on the boards of a number of charitable and community organizations, including the Ottawa Civic Hospital, the Elizabeth Fry Society, the Mental Health Association for Ontario, Opera Lyra Ottawa, and the Carleton University Board of Governors. At present, she is on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.
In addition to being an engaged member of the Ottawa community, Mary Jane is a member of the County of Carleton Law Association and its past president, the Advocates’ Society of Ontario, and the Canadian Bar Association.
