Following my original field of study in social sciences and as research assistant to Professor Julian Payne (Divorce Digest), I have focused my practice on the family and dispute resolution. Notably, I served as Crown Counsel with the Office of the Children’s Lawyer in custody /access and child protection matters for over two decades. My original study in mediation began in the early 1990s and I engaged a mediation internship with Rick Weiler and Richard Russell in 1995. I took a two-year working sabbatical to enhance my mediation practice between 1995 and 1997 which included attending an advanced negotiation program at Harvard Law School with Professor Roger Fisher. By the year 2000 I had attained advanced practice status with a number of leading organizations including the Ontario Association for Family Mediation, Association of Conflict Resolution and the Academy of Professional Family Mediators. In 2007, I obtained certification as a Certified Child Protection Mediator in Ontario (C.Med). In 2009, I became the first Canadian to be approved as a Certified Florida Supreme Court Mediator in Family and a number of other practice specialties.

During the last 25 years, I have participated in a number of pilot projects establishing mediation as an effective and reliable process in conflict resolution and court-connected services. Notably, I was one of the first six mediators chosen for the Ontario mandatory mediation project in civil litigation in Ottawa in 1997 and I continued on the Ottawa and Toronto rosters for the first decade of implementation (including co-chair of the mentoring committee). I designed mediation programs (including the Ontario Soccer Association) and participated in other restorative and criminal justice pilot projects (eg. the Ottawa Dispute Resolution Centre) as a front-line mediator.

In the last decade,I have participated in the mediation internship of over a dozen successful candidates with the Ontario Association for Family Mediation. I have completed mediation and collaborative law trainer programs. I have written extensively on the subject of mediation and collaborative practice with the view supporting recruitment and best practices.I have been asked to write opinions on family law for the Law Times on numerous occasions. I am a CTV resource in family law and mediation.

I have served on a number of community organizations in conflict resolution, national charities and athletics (including first president of the Canadian Celiac Association and founding president of the Ontario Collaborative Law Federation). I am a past president of the Ottawa chapter of the OAFM. I serve as a disciplinary complaints investigator with the OAFM and Chair the law reform subsection of the advocacy committee. As such, I am completing research on the innovative role of family mediation in our future courts.

I have completed a recent course in online mediation certification and am assisting in the next OAFM training June 25/26. Presently, I continue in my status as a licensed lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario (21285G); having no disciplinary or law pro family claims at LSO or any mediation organization. I maintain professional insurance through the OAFM and errors and omissions excess insurance through Lawpro. At this juncture, I mediate exclusively while continuing as Strategic Counsel and manager of all family law matters at AGB Lawyers.
